DESAN Shipyard, owned by the Kaptanoğlu Group, which has been serving the maritime industry for more than a century, took part in the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Panel held as part of Marine Engineering Week, organized by the Chamber of Marine Engineers of TMMOB. During the panel, data and insights were shared on DESAN Shipyard’s Applied OHS Training Hall, the first and only facility of its kind in the Turkish shipbuilding industry, as well as its contributions to the shipyard sector.

Speaking at the panel, Fatih Çimen, DESAN’s General Audit and Support Units Manager, stated that 4,400 people had received theoretical and practical training at the DESAN Applied Training Hall since its opening one year ago, and that the recorded rate of unsafe behavior had decreased by 64%.

Recognizing Occupational Health and Safety as a fundamental principle applied in every area, DESAN Shipyard launched its “Applied OHS Training Hall” in 2021 with the awareness that training is the most effective method in this field. At the Applied OHS Training Hall, personnel who will begin working at DESAN Shipyard are introduced, before starting work, to all equipment they will use in the shipyard area, on ships, in floating docks, enclosed areas and workshops, and are given the opportunity to experience them in practice. Employees who continue to work at the shipyard also periodically attend various up-to-date OHS training sessions in the hall, allowing them to refresh and reinforce their knowledge of occupational health and safety. The Training Hall also serves all sector employees outside DESAN Shipyard.

Since its opening in 2021, approximately 4,400 people have attended the training sessions held at the Applied OHS Training Hall, where practical training was implemented for the first time with the aim of creating behavioral change among employees. Within one year, the rate of employees attending training for a second time increased by 90%, while the recorded rate of unsafe behavior decreased by 64%.

Fatih Çimen: “DESAN contributes not only to its own employees but also to the entire industry”

Providing information on the subject, Fatih Çimen, DESAN’s General Audit and Support Units Manager, said:

“Our shipyard stands out with the importance it attaches to training in Occupational Health and Safety and makes investments beyond legal requirements. Our applied training hall is one of the best examples of this approach. Through practical training, our personnel work in the field in a more qualified and conscious manner. In order to build a strong occupational safety culture at our shipyard, we provide both practical and theoretical training not only to our own employees but also to sector employees. With our competent team and applied training hall, we are also contributing to the entire industry. We take great pride and happiness in this on behalf of Turkish shipbuilding.”
